Cómo abordar una brecha en su currículum al cambiar de carrera

s probable que haya sentido una oleada de entusiasmo cuando tomó la decisión de cambiar de carrera. Pero, ¿qué debe hacer si su búsqueda de empleo empieza a convertirse en una tarea tediosa y desalentadora, y la brecha en su currículum aumenta día tras día?

Seamos claros: las brechas en el currículum de menos de un año no suelen ser motivo de alarma. “Los empleadores comprenden la volatilidad del mercado laboral, especialmente desde la pandemia”, afirma Tristan Layfield, asesor profesional y consultor de currículums. Sin embargo, dado que las habilidades requieren práctica y perfeccionamiento constantes, los empleadores tienden a ser más cautelosos ante una brecha prolongada, lo cual representa un desafío particular cuando usted está tratando de ingresar a un campo distinto.

Let’s be clear: Resume gaps shorter than a year typically don’t raise red flags. “Employers understand the volatility of the job market, especially since the pandemic,” says Tristan Layfield, a career coach and resume consultant. However, given that skills require constant practice and refinement, employers tend to be more cautious about a lengthy gap — which poses a special challenge when you’re trying to break into a different field.

To successfully navigate this transition, focus on “becoming your new career,” advises Marlo Lyons, author of «Wanted → New Career: The Definitive Playbook for Transitioning to a New Career or Finding Your Dream Job.» This involves learning new skills, cultivating industry connections and gaining relevant experience.

Here are strategies to try if your initial exhilaration is fading and a new career, let alone a job offer, is starting to feel distant.

REMEMBER YOUR INITIAL MOTIVATION

Second-guessing your decision to switch careers during a drawn-out job search is normal, explains Layfield. “You wonder: ‘Am I ever going to get there?’” But it’s during these low moments when you need to think about what drove you to seek a change in the first place, he says. “Your motivation is your mindset.”

MAXIMIZE YOUR DEVELOPMENT

The most important thing you can do during this in-between phase is to grow your skills, says Lyons. Enroll in courses, earn certifications, intern in your target industry and take on contract work. This may require some humility, but it’s necessary when competing against experienced candidates, she adds.

REVAMP YOUR RESUME …

Lyons suggests applying the “lens of your new career” to give your resume a makeover. This involves examining job descriptions in your target field, identifying relevant experiences and skills and then tailoring your resume to highlight those strengths. When you notice discrepancies between job requirements and your current skill set, Lyons recommends concentrating on developing and strengthening those areas.

… AND BE MINDFUL OF THE GAP

While a short resume gap is generally not a significant concern, companies tend to favor candidates who are currently employed and in high demand, says Layfield. That’s why as a career switcher, your resume needs to mitigate any potential concerns by emphasizing your commitment to professional growth. The goal is to “reassure employers that you’re keeping your skills sharp,” he explains.

DON’T SHY AWAY FROM THE GAP; REFRAME IT

If you’ve made it to the interview stage, “it’s likely that the employer has decided your resume gap is not a big deal,” says Layfield. “If they don’t ask about it, they’re not as worried about it as you are.” That said, you should be prepared to talk about what you’ve been up to since you were last employed. “Use it as an opportunity to demonstrate your initiative,” says Lyons. Highlight courses, freelance projects and volunteer experiences.
