(Este consejo es una adaptación de “How to Communicate with Your Team When Business Is Bad”, de Rebecca Knight).

He aquí cómo hacerlo.

(Este consejo es una adaptación de “How to Be Direct Without Being Rude”, de Yasmina Khelifi e Irina Cozma).

(Este consejo es una adaptación de “Talking About a Difficult Decision — When You Can’t Share All the Details”, de David Lancefield).

Here is a curated selection of our favorite management tips on communicating like a leader:

PRACTICE GRACIOUS COMMUNICATION

Most of us want to communicate with kindness, but it can be challenging to convey warmth and compassion under frustrating, stressful or maddening circumstances. Three practices can help you in your day-to-day interactions, as well as big, difficult conversations.

First, meet confrontation with grace. This means wearing a smile and exuding patience and courtesy when an employee brings you difficult news or challenges your decision-making. An open-minded tone will signal that you’re there to listen, process and problem-solve — not to reprimand or enforce your own authority.

Next, give credit whenever you can. Recognizing your employees and showing them gratitude will engender their enthusiasm, hard work, trust and loyalty.

Finally, give people space and clarity so you don’t catch them off guard. Schedule conversations in advance or ask them if it’s a good time to talk — and give them a quick preview of what you’d like to talk about. These kind, simple gestures will give your counterpart an opportunity to prepare, and make it clear that you’re interested in listening to their response.

(This tip is adapted from “The Simple Power of Communicating with Kindness,” by Sally Susman.)

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR TEAM WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH

When business challenges mount, your team doesn’t need spin — they need clarity. Here’s how to be transparent, steady and constructive, even when you don’t have all the answers.

— Acknowledge what’s working. As you address uncertainty, point to areas of progress. Use a “yes, and” approach: Yes, things are messy — and we’re doing good work. Be honest about challenges without slipping into blame or false optimism.

— Make space for real questions. Don’t redirect or minimize concerns. Ask your team what’s weighing on them and how it’s showing up in their day-to-day work lives. If no one speaks up, check in with trusted team members behind the scenes to get a fuller picture.

— Respond with care. When you don’t have answers, explain what could influence the outcome. Share details only if they affect the team’s reality; disclosing what’s irrelevant or uncertain creates confusion.

— Stick to the facts. Avoid speculation. Use data and observable progress to ground your message. Reinforce how the team’s work supports key business goals like revenue or efficiency.

— Model resilience. Show up with calm and clarity. In tough moments, consistency builds trust — and helps your team focus on what they can control.

(This tip is adapted from “How to Communicate with Your Team When Business Is Bad,” by Rebecca Knight.)

DELIVER A MESSAGE THAT STICKS

Whether you’re giving a presentation, writing an email or leading a meeting, it’s important to communicate your message in a way that’s memorable. By mastering a few strategies based in memory science, you can create messages that linger in the minds of your audience, leaving a lasting impact. Here’s how.

— Chunk it up. Your audience can only handle three to four pieces of information at once. Organizing your key points under one central idea will help them retain details and connect the dots.

— Make it concrete. Abstract ideas are tough to remember. Use vivid, relatable examples that evoke sensory details to create a mental image your audience won’t forget.

— Provide callbacks. Revisit earlier points to strengthen your audience’s recall. Subtle reminders of previous content help reinforce memory and tie new information to existing knowledge.

— Spark curiosity. Don’t just deliver answers — pose intriguing questions that highlight knowledge gaps. Curiosity fuels memory, making your message stick.

(This tip is adapted from “How to Craft a Memorable Message, According to Science,” by Charan Ranganath.)

COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY — NOT RUDELY

Direct communication is an important work skill — especially for a manager. Being clear about what you want and need from people (and why) makes everything more efficient. But if you’re too harsh, you can end up doing more harm than good. Here’s how to toe the line between being direct and veering into rudeness.

— When delivering feedback, focus on facts. Remove your emotions from the conversation, and instead give the person honest, concrete evidence about their performance. Your goal is to help them grow, not to vent.

— When expressing an opinion, use “I” statements. Avoid making accusations or casting blame, which will put your employee on the defensive. Instead of calling them out and pointing fingers, call them in by expressing your experience of their behavior.

— Turn a hard “no” into a soft “no.” As a direct person, your instinct may be to unambiguously reject an inessential work request that comes in when you just don’t have the bandwidth to take it on. But if you’re too blunt, you risk being perceived as someone who doesn’t want to collaborate or help out. Instead, find the compassion to offer an alternative that works better for you or kindly explain why it’s impossible for you to take on.

— When making a request, be considerate, not commanding. There’s nothing wrong with giving clear, direct instructions and assignments. Just remember to be reasonable, express gratitude, and offer support if your employee needs it.

(This tip is adapted from “How to Be Direct Without Being Rude,” by Yasmina Khelifi and Irina Cozma.)

COMMUNICATING DIFFICULT DECISIONS WHEN YOU CAN’T BE FULLY TRANSPARENT

When you have to communicate a difficult organizational decision, it’s hard to know how much information to provide, particularly when you can’t be fully transparent yet. Saying nothing can undermine people’s trust, and saying too much can leave people feeling overwhelmed. You can strike the balance by being candid — up to a point.

Frame the situation’s context clearly so people understand why the organization is considering big changes. Explain that you’ll be as transparent as possible, use plain language (not corporate-speak), and respond to questions. People appreciate honesty, even if the message is incomplete or not what they want to hear. Be precise about what you can say now and when you’ll say more, providing an overall timeline for the process. But avoid giving people running commentary as developments unfold; it can lead to unhelpful distractions and take up considerable management time.

If possible, let employees in on the options you’re considering, showing the logic behind your coming actions. This builds trust and helps mitigate the anxiety they may be feeling as they consider every combination of eventualities (including catastrophic ones). It also prevents them from feeling caught by surprise when you announce the final set of changes.

(This tip is adapted from “Talking About a Difficult Decision — When You Can’t Share All the Details,” by David Lancefield.)

— Actúe, aunque sea a pequeña escala.

Here are 10 of our favorite tips from 2025.

BECOME A MORE COURAGEOUS LEADER

Courage is not about being fearless; it’s about acting in service of a purpose, even when fear is present. And it’s a skill that can be developed.

— Reframe fear through story. Courage starts with the stories you tell yourself. Look for patterns in the chaos and turn them into a narrative that gives you agency. Frame your actions as a moral mission or draw strength from personal belief systems to reduce fear and move forward.

— Build confidence deliberately. Competence builds courage. Study best practices until they become instinctive, expand your problem-solving tool kit and focus on what you can control. The more prepared and grounded you are, the easier it is to take bold, self-assured steps.

— Take action — even if it’s small. You don’t need to know the whole path — just the next step. Evaluate the situation, test a small hypothesis, learn from it and adjust. That momentum will build clarity and conviction.

— Rely on others. Courage grows in connection. Lean on allies for emotional support, resources and honest feedback. Constructive input from others strengthens your decision-making and reinforces your sense of purpose.

— Stay calm. Regulate fear with rest, rituals and reframing. When emotions spike, stay grounded so you can act from a place of poise.

CREATE A ONE-SLIDE STRATEGY THAT STICKS

If your strategy is hard to explain, it’ll be even harder for others to understand and follow. A clear, well-designed visualization can help you get buy-in from employees and investors alike.

— Group ideas into three or four main concepts. Focus on a few essential elements. Too many components dilute clarity and confuse your audience. People grasp strategy best when they can organize it into a simple, logical framework.

— Add layers of detail. For each core concept, include concrete operational details. Help people understand not just what the strategy is, but how it plays out in day-to-day execution.

— Design for clarity, not decoration. Use color only to separate layers. Avoid flashy effects or unrelated graphics — overcomplication harms comprehension.

— Show how it all connects. Use arrows or flows to illustrate cause-and-effect relationships. A good visualization should mirror the story you’re telling and clarify how each element drives the next.

— Keep it horizontal. Layouts that follow a left-to-right flow are easier to process. Our brains are wired to scan landscapes, so align your design with how people naturally absorb information.

6 STEPS TO IDENTIFYING YOUR CORE VALUES

As a leader, you’ll face numerous high-stakes situations. When there’s no clear playbook for how to handle them, your personal core values can guide your most difficult decisions. But to use them effectively, you need to define them first.

— Reflect on high-energy moments. When do you feel fully alive and engaged? Think about moments outside of work that energize you, such as volunteering, building community and solving complex problems.

— Recall your best work. Which jobs or roles brought out your strongest performance? What values were honored in those environments?

— Listen to what others ask of you. What advice or support do people seek you out for most often? These patterns can reveal strengths tied to your deeper principles.

— Imagine your legacy. What do you want people to say in your eulogy? How do you want to be remembered by those closest to you?

— Spot your dealbreakers. When have you felt most disengaged or frustrated? These moments often reflect a violation of your values.

— Name what you can’t stand in others. Think about behaviors that bother you deeply — they often point to your non-negotiables.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “When You’re the Executive Everyone Relies On — and You’re Burning Out”, de Shanna Hocking.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “When You’re Suddenly Managing More People — and Feeling Buried”, de Jenny Fernandez y Kathryn Landis.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “Stop Overloading the Wrong Part of Your Brain at Work”, de Amy Brann.

Here’s How to Recover.”, de Dina Denham Smith.

HOW TO AVOID BURNOUT WHEN YOU’RE THE ‘GO-TO’ LEADER

— Prioritize without overcommitting. When given a new task, don’t default to saying yes. Assess how it fits with your priorities, then suggest a clear path forward. Make trade-offs visible.

— Clarify ownership. If someone else is better positioned to lead, or if co-leadership makes more sense, recommend it. Shared ownership solves more than just bandwidth issues; it sets the tone for collaborative leadership.

— Have a capacity conversation. If your workload is becoming unsustainable, raise it with your boss. Instead of saying no, clarify the strategic trade-offs. Invite them to prioritize with you.

— Redefine your value. Being indispensable can feel good, but it can also stunt your growth. Ask whether you’re saying yes for impact or for affirmation. Strategic leaders create space for vision, not just execution.

This tip is adapted from “When You’re the Executive Everyone Relies On — and You’re Burning Out,” by Shanna Hocking.

FAKING ENTHUSIASM IS EXHAUSTING. HERE’S HOW TO BREAK THE CYCLE

— Take micro-breaks on nonstop days. Five minutes can make a difference. Deep breathing, stretching, looking at nature or chatting briefly with a colleague can restore energy, improve mood and even boost performance.

— Manage emotions in the moment. When you can’t step away during a stressful moment, pause and take a slow breath to reset your mind and body. Notice what you’re feeling, then reframe the situation before you respond. Even briefly acknowledging your own emotions (and sharing them with others when appropriate) can restore authenticity and connection.

This tip is adapted from “How ‘Surface Acting’ Drains Leaders — and How to Break the Cycle,” by Gordon M. Sayre et al.

HOW TO MANAGE A SPRAWLING TEAM — WITHOUT BURNING OUT

— Reset how you work — together. Don’t lead a large team like a small one. Revisit your availability, role in decisions, and team routines. Set new expectations with your team, then cocreate working norms that clarify how you collaborate, communicate and resolve conflict.

— Prioritize visibly. You can’t do it all. Focus on what matters most — and make that focus public.

— Delegate with clarity. Scaling isn’t about doing more — it’s about empowering others.

— Simplify the system. Growth often leads to clutter. Audit your team’s tools, meetings and processes. Eliminate what slows you down. Don’t overengineer — just start by removing obvious friction.

— Protect your energy. You set the tone. Use a weekly check-in to monitor your energy and make adjustments before burnout sets in.

This tip is adapted from “When You’re Suddenly Managing More People — and Feeling Buried,” by Jenny Fernandez and Kathryn Landis.

FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE, USE YOUR BRAIN DIFFERENTLY

—Audit your cognitive patterns. Don’t just track time, but the type of thinking you’re doing. Are you deep in focus, switching tasks, solving emotional problems or skimming? Identify what drains or sharpens your mind, and redesign your week to match peak energy with deep work.

— Make recovery visible. Embed short buffers after intense meetings, block decompression time on your calendar, and rotate meeting-free half-days across your team.

— Switch your decision-making mode. Step away, change environments, and reframe the problem. This activates your “salience network,” helping you spot what truly matters.

— Design team routines for whole-brain work. Label meetings by cognitive mode: focus, reflect, or connect. Schedule one team-wide “no new input” block each week. This should be a time to synthesize existing information, not consume new information.

— Simplify systems. Run an input audit. How many platforms, requests or messages are employees managing in parallel? Cut the clutter, align internal initiatives with available attention, and protect people’s time for core work.

This tip is adapted from “Stop Overloading the Wrong Part of Your Brain at Work,” by Amy Brann.

HOW TO TAKE BETTER BREAKS

— Time them wisely. Short, well-placed breaks — especially in the morning or right after demanding tasks — help you sustain energy and focus throughout the day.

— Get moving. Walking, stretching or any light physical activity re-energizes your body and clears mental fog.

— Relax your mind. Deep breathing, mindfulness or progressive muscle relaxation resets cognitive function and reduces stress.

— Prioritize social connection. Casual, positive conversations with colleagues boost mood and foster collaboration.

— Do something creative. Breaks don’t have to be idle — brainstorming, mentoring or reflecting can be refreshing and productive.

— Take control of your time. Choose break activities that work for you, whether it’s alone time, a walk or a quick personal task.

— Handle personal errands. Running small errands or taking care of family needs can reduce mental load and help you refocus.

This tip is adapted from “A Guide to Taking Better Breaks at Work,” by Kira Schabram and Christopher M. Barnes.

HOW TO RECOVER FROM THE EMOTIONAL DRAIN OF LEADERSHIP

— Reflect to build emotional awareness. After a hard moment, pause and ask yourself: What am I feeling? Where do I feel it in my body? What are my emotions telling me? Write down your answers or record a voice memo. Processing your feelings — not suppressing them — helps you move forward without carrying invisible weight.

— Reframe to change your perspective. Emotionally tough experiences can distort how you see yourself or your situation. Ask: What’s the silver lining? How might this help me grow? Reframing isn’t denial — it’s choosing a more empowering narrative.

— Restore to rebuild your energy. You can’t lead well on an empty tank. Protect your emotional reserves by detaching from work, relaxing intentionally, learning something new and reclaiming control over small parts of your day.

This tip is adapted from “Leading Is Emotionally Draining. Here’s How to Recover.” by Dina Denham Smith.

PUSH BACK ON UNREALISTIC GOALS — STRATEGICALLY

— Reframe refusal as prioritization. It’s not about what you can’t do — it’s about what matters most. Position your refusal as a leadership decision. For example: “To do X well, we’d need to pause Y.”

— Show the cost of saying yes. Make trade-offs visible. Suggest hearing directly from teams, quantify resource limits, and offer realistic alternatives: “We can’t hit 40%, but we can deliver a sustainable 25% increase.”

— Build a system that supports refusal. Assemble teams to stress-test initiatives before they’re approved. Run pre-mortems to surface risks early. Define “kill criteria” so projects don’t drag on past their usefulness.

— Model strategic refusal. Set the tone by using data to back your pushback. Focus on business risk, not bandwidth.

This tip is adapted from “When You’re Asked to Meet Impossible Goals,” by Luis Velasquez and Jordan Stark.

— Tome acción, aunque sea a pequeña escala.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “Now Is the Time for Courage”, de Ranjay Gulati.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “How to Communicate with Your Team When Business Is Bad”, de Rebecca Knight.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “In Uncertain Times, Ask These Questions Before You Make a Decision”, de Cheryl Strauss Einhorn.

Este consejo es una adaptación de “How to Keep Your Team’s Spirits Up in Anxious Times”, de Ranjay Gulati.

BECOME A MORE COURAGEOUS LEADER

When uncertainty strikes, the default reaction is often to retreat. But courageous leaders don’t wait for clarity — they create it. Courage is not about being fearless; it’s about acting in service of a purpose. And it’s a skill that can be developed. Here’s how.

REFRAME FEAR THROUGH STORY. Courage starts with the stories you tell yourself. Look for patterns in the chaos and turn them into a narrative that gives you agency.

BUILD CONFIDENCE DELIBERATELY. Competence builds courage. Study best practices until they become instinctive, expand your problem-solving tool kit and focus on what you can control.

TAKE ACTION — EVEN IF IT’S SMALL. You don’t need to know the whole path — just the next step. Evaluate the situation, test a small hypothesis, learn from it and adjust.

RELY ON OTHERS. Courage grows in connection. Lean on allies for emotional support, resources and honest feedback. Constructive input from others strengthens your decision-making and reinforces your sense of purpose.

STAY CALM. Regulate fear with rest, rituals and reframing. When emotions spike, stay grounded so you can act from a place of poise.

This tip is adapted from “Now Is the Time for Courage,” by Ranjay Gulati.

CONSIDER “STRATEGIC HIBERNATION” WHEN FACING HEADWINDS

As political headwinds grow stronger and reputational risks more volatile, one option leaders can consider is strategic hibernation to build flexibility and preserve your organization’s options. Here’s how:

MAINTAIN YOUR CORE ASSETS. Don’t abandon your mission or dismantle essential teams. Preserve infrastructure, retain key talent and find adjacent work to sustain momentum.

MONITOR POLITICAL SIGNALS. Strategic hibernation isn’t passive waiting; it requires sharp political awareness. Track regulatory shifts, identify inflection points and anticipate when you can reenter with speed.

ADJUST YOUR EXTERNAL VISIBILITY. In turbulent environments, say just enough to stay aligned without compromising your values. Quietly continue your work (under new labels if necessary), reduce public messaging if needed and coordinate messaging to avoid drawing fire.

This tip is adapted from “Is This a Moment for Strategic Hibernation?,” by Christopher Marquis.

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR TEAM WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH

When business challenges mount, your team doesn’t need spin — they need clarity. Here’s how to be transparent, steady and constructive even when you don’t have all the answers.

ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT’S WORKING. As you address uncertainty, point to areas of progress. Use a “yes, and” approach: Yes, things are messy — and we’re doing good work. Be honest about challenges without slipping into blame or false optimism.

MAKE SPACE FOR REAL QUESTIONS. Don’t redirect or minimize concerns. Ask your team what’s weighing on them and how it’s showing up in their day-to-day work lives. If no one speaks up, check in with trusted team members behind the scenes to get a fuller picture.

RESPOND WITH CARE. When you don’t have answers, explain what could influence the outcome.

STICK TO THE FACTS. Avoid speculation. Use data and observable progress to ground your message. Reinforce how the team’s work supports key business goals like revenue or efficiency.

MODEL RESILIENCE. Show up with calm and clarity. In tough moments, consistency builds trust — and helps your team focus on what they can control.

This tip is adapted from “How to Communicate with Your Team When Business Is Bad,” by Rebecca Knight.

USE SUBTRACTION TO BOOST EFFICIENCY—WITHOUT WEAKENING YOUR BUSINESS

When uncertainty hits, it’s tempting to start making cuts. But indiscriminate subtraction can backfire. Approach any subtraction in one of six ways.

ELIMINATE WHAT NO LONGER ADDS VALUE. Cut components, steps or rules that don’t serve a clear function. Done right, this boosts speed, reduces costs and sharpens focus without undermining trust or capability.

SUBSTITUTE COMPLEXITY WITH SIMPLICITY. Swap out high-maintenance tools or workflows with simpler options that meet the same need.

CONSOLIDATE OVERLAPPING FUNCTIONS. Merge tasks, systems or touchpoints into integrated solutions. This reduces duplicative efforts, improves continuity and enhances the user experience.

HIDE COMPLEXITY BEHIND CLEAN INTERFACES. Keep systems powerful under the hood, but conceal nonessential details so users only see what they need, reducing overload while keeping functionality intact.

PAUSE, DON’T DELETE. Suspend features or services that aren’t needed now but may return. This preserves flexibility and avoids burning bridges.

ABSTRACT THE BACKEND. Use interface layers to simplify user interaction with complex systems, making advanced functionality accessible and scalable.

This tip is adapted from “In Turbulent Times, Consider ‘Strategic Subtraction’,” by Vijay Govindarajan et al.

ASK SMARTER QUESTIONS IN THE FACE OF UNCERTAINTY

In a world of constant disruption, the instinct to seek clarity can lead you to oversimplify complex problems. Ask questions that expand your thinking and reveal wiser paths forward. Start with these four.

WHAT DECISION TODAY WILL STILL MAKE SENSE A YEAR FROM NOW? This question pushes you beyond short-term pressure. It invites you to prioritize decisions that align with long-term values and direction, helping you move from reactive to resilient.

IF THIS DECISION BECAME A CASE STUDY IN LEADERSHIP, WHAT WOULD IT TEACH? Use this to test not just the logic of your decision but its message. What example are you setting? What does it say about your team’s character, clarity and culture?

WHAT IF THIS ISN’T THE STORM — WHAT IF IT’S THE CLIMATE? Stop waiting for volatility to pass. If disruption is the norm, ask what needs to change permanently so you can endure, not just survive.

WHAT’S THE COST OF WAITING? Delaying may feel safe, but inaction carries hidden risks. This question reframes the moment and urges you to act with intention before momentum is lost.

This tip is adapted from “In Uncertain Times, Ask These Questions Before You Make a Decision,” by Cheryl Strauss Einhorn.

STEADY YOUR TEAM IN ANXIOUS TIMES

In times of uncertainty, your team looks to you not just for strategy, but for reassurance and direction. To move people from fear to confidence, you need to show up with clarity, conviction and calm. Here’s how.

COMMUNICATE A CLEAR PURPOSE. Share a reason for being that feels bigger than day-to-day tasks. Frame the work as part of a collective mission built on shared values. Tell stories that connect individuals to the larger goal so they feel pride and ownership in their role.

EMBODY THE VALUES YOU PROMOTE. Live the principles you want others to follow. Show through your actions that you’re deeply committed to the organization and its people — especially when it requires sacrifice.

MODEL CALM FOCUS UNDER PRESSURE. Care deeply, but don’t get consumed by results. Own setbacks, learn from them and move forward steadily. By maintaining composure, you become a stabilizing force that helps your team stay grounded, motivated and focused on progress.

This tip is adapted from “How to Keep Your Team’s Spirits Up in Anxious Times,” by Ranjay Gulati.
