In the summer of 2018, a curious news story began to make the rounds on social media: Domino’s Pizza was filling potholes in towns across America, leaving a branded sticker on the freshly laid asphalt. The initiative, playfully named “Paving for Pizza,” was a practical response to a common nuisance — the potholes that can wreak havoc on cars, buses and yes, pizza deliveries.

Domino’s campaign earned the company more than 1 billion media impressions in its first eight months alone. The runaway success illustrates a new, underutilized approach to brand strategy.

According to surveys by PR giant Edelman, just 63% of consumers trust brands to do what is right, 46% say brands are not doing enough to address issues like climate change, yet 59% of consumers will pay more if the brand does good in the world.

Brands are thus in a bind — they must draw attention to themselves but be seen to be acting selflessly. To understand how to do this successfully, I studied more than 150 award-winning campaigns from the Cannes Lions (the preeminent marketing awards for “viral” marketing campaigns) between 2018 and 2023.

I developed a framework to guide brands in this endeavor, ensuring their campaigns not only exhibit heroism but also resonate effectively with their audience. The framework includes four necessary conditions to ensure the success of a hero campaign.

SEVERITY

Creating a hero campaign begins by identifying a problem in society that is severe enough for people to care about. The litmus test for identifying a sufficiently severe social or environmental issue is that consumers must view it as a genuine threat, either now or in the future.

EFFORT

Picture a superhero attempting to save the occupants of a burning house. They won’t be seen as a hero unless they do their absolute best to save the people inside — you can’t phone in efforts to “save the day.” Hero brands must similarly demonstrate determination and dedication to avoid being seen to be paying only lip service to their noble intentions.

AFFINITY

Affinity is a feeling of warmth, respect, or deep appreciation for an activity, idea, or object. A campaign with high affinity is viewed as relevant by the target audience, while a campaign with low affinity is seen as irrelevant.

The most common way to increase the affinity in a hero campaign is to position the brand as a justice seeker, challenging a powerful adversary in the name of change.

REACH

For a hero campaign to succeed, it needs to reach enough people. Two critical factors determine sufficient reach: public awareness of the social issue and the recognition of its negative impact on society.

Brands, like people, possess distinct personalities and seek admiration and recognition. However, like responsible citizens, brands need to introspect and ask, “How can I contribute meaningfully to society?” This marks the beginning of a journey where a brand transcends traditional marketing and branding paradigms to become a cherished and respected member of the community it serves.

He aquí cómo hacerlo:

According to PwC’s 2025 AI predictions, artificial intelligence (AI) is the major factor fundamentally changing how to do business and create value this year. AI is swiftly being integrated into how employees execute core tasks in organizations across industries, from streamlining customer service to supporting decision-making and improving efficiency. This tech is also poised to change how workers are managed. AI systems and agents are increasingly able to oversee workflow and how employees and AI work together on those tasks.

Yet while the percentage of organizations adopting AI has jumped from 55% in 2023 to 78% in 2024, according to McKinsey, employees nevertheless display significantly less enthusiasm about using AI in their daily activities. This raises an important question: Do employees trust these technologies?

Evidence suggests that trust is in short supply. In a recent Pew Research survey, respondents reported feeling reticent about artificial intelligence: 52% reported feeling “worried” about the impact of AI in the workplace and 33% said they felt “overwhelmed,” compared to 36% who described themselves as “hopeful.” Globally, Edelman found that 35% of respondents said they rejected AI compared to 30% that embraced it. According to another Pew Research survey, 71% of Americans opposed companies using AI to make final hiring decisions, and 61% opposed using it to track workers’ movements.

Recent management research has also shown that one of the major reasons why employees do not trust AI is that they see these tools as lacking benevolence in how they make recommendations and decisions, and worry about whether AI will “care” and consider employee interests. Benevolence — the willingness to engage in a positive orientation to serve the interests of an interdependent other — is an important concept here because it represents the fundamental characteristic of the trustee (AI) to do good for the trustor (employees) as basis for trust to emerge.

These employee concerns also send a signal to organizational leaders that confidence in them might be lacking, too. Employees want to know whether adopting AI will promote their interests or lead to their dismissal; whether it will enhance or replace their contributions.

As organizations consider integrating AI systems into their management and decision-making, they need to ask how AI will shape how employees perceive benevolence. In thinking about this, they should consider how these systems might affect employees’ experiences and how they see their jobs, and what role management should play in mediating AI’s recommendations to address employee concerns.

AI AND THE ABILITY TO BE BENEVOLENT

AI systems are increasingly adept at recognizing patterns in human interactions. This capability is what makes them so effective to function (semi-)autonomously in areas like customer service, personalized recommendations and workflow management. By analyzing vast data sets of human behavior AI systems can make nuanced inferences about human preferences, communication styles and responses, and subsequently make decisions. Because of this, these systems can also communicate in ways that can seem humanlike.

Because AI mirrors back what it sees in the data and takes cues from whoever is giving it instructions, it can reflect both the lived and stated values of a company. Organizations can train AI that provide recommendations to appear benevolentthrough the use of targeted prompts and requests. An AI might be instructed, for instance, to identify and prioritize the interests of the stakeholders that are involved in a business decision.

Companies are already doing this. For example, in 2017, Salesforce used its internal AI system to advise leadership when they were making decisions. In these cases, AI was used to reduce bias in meetings and reduce internal politics or personal agendas. It helped to advocate for the interests of stakeholders, help leaders make benevolent decisions and demonstrate that AI can be a tool that helps promote benevolence in decision-making.

Employees aren’t likely to experience these interventions as evidence of AI’s benevolence — nor should they — because they generally think of that as a human quality and one out of reach of these tools.

That’s because AI systems aren’t and can’t be benevolent. Indeed, these systems operate through algorithms that follow statistical patterns and predefined goals without any self-driven purpose; and as such there is no intent in the internal logic of the AI engine. Without the ability to have an opinion and make a judgment call, AI systems are limited in their understanding of the world and what drives humans in that world. And, for that reason, AI systems do not possess a willingness to genuinely take care of people’s interests.

RECOMMENDATIONS

To promote trust in AI, it is important for organizations to realize that this is not only an engineering exercise where interventions at the level of the tech itself are needed, such as open-source code and promoting explainable AI. Ensuring that AI is accepted by employees requires that they are able to understand it and how it works. Achieving this type of trust requires that interventions are taken at both the level of the AI and leadership. Here’s how to do so:

First, to build an environment where employees can confidently adopt AI, organizations must promote AI’s cognitive trust factors — reliability, accuracy and transparency. Research shows that systems perceived as reliable and comprehensible promote higher acceptance among users. This type of trust can be achieved by intervening in the tech itself. For example, conducting regular audits of AI’s accuracy, bias-mitigation efforts and performance tracking can reassure employees of AI’s dependability, encouraging them to engage fully with the technology.

Second, leaders need to demonstrate genuine concern for employee well-being and fairness, because AI can’t. Ultimately, leadership will be deciding how AI is used and empowered, and where it isn’t. By involving employees in discussions about AI’s role in their work and addressing their concerns transparently, leaders can help create a work culture where employees feel valued and perceive AI as a solution that is adopted with the aim to empower and grow employees rather than to replace them.

Third, the optimal solution for the lack of trust in AI requires an “AI-leader combination” that ensures that employees feel not only technically confident in AI but also reassured that it will serve their interests in respectful and fair ways. To promote the acceptance of this AI-leader combination in enhancing trust in AI across the board organizations need to develop and implement training programs. These programs exist to help employees feel less threatened by AI adoption while at the same time feeling empowered by their supervisors. This can be done by promoting digital literacy and understanding of AI’s functioning. Enhanced understanding of AI, paired with leadership-led discussions that frame AI as a supportive tool to contribute to the company’s purpose and the interests of all involved, will further empower employees to see how AI can contribute to their roles and career growth.
